Nigeria puts AI at the center of its innovation push with UniPod rollout

The Federal Government is rolling out a national network of University Innovation Pods, starting with the AI UniPod at the University of Lagos.

The idea is to turn universities into spaces where students and startups can actually build things, not just study theory. The UNILAG hub is the first, and more are expected to follow across other universities in the country.

Inside the facility, there’s space for AI work, robotics, design, and prototyping. It’s meant to bring everything together so ideas don’t just stay on paper.

The project is backed by the government, UNDP, and TETFund, with each hub expected to focus on areas like agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and green innovation.

The bigger goal is to push more practical innovation from universities and support young people building tech-driven solutions.

What happens next will come down to how well it’s actually run and whether it connects with real industry needs.
