French biotech company Abivax is preparing to bring its breakthrough ulcerative colitis treatment to the U.S. market. At the same time, growing takeover speculation is putting the company in the spotlight as major drugmakers search for their next blockbuster acquisition.
Abivax says it remains on track to launch its experimental ulcerative colitis drug, obefazimod, in the United States, even as rumours of a potential takeover continue to grow.
The French biotechnology company plans to submit its application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the fourth quarter of 2026. If approved, obefazimod could become a new once-daily oral treatment for patients living with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis.
Investor interest has surged in recent months. Analysts believe Abivax has become one of the most attractive acquisition targets in the biotech industry because few late-stage inflammatory bowel disease treatments remain available for purchase. The excitement follows encouraging clinical trial results.
Abivax reported that obefazimod met the main goals of its Phase 3 maintenance study and delivered strong remission rates among patients with ulcerative colitis. Additional data also helped ease earlier concerns about the drug’s safety profile.
Earlier this year, the company’s shares came under pressure after investors reacted to isolated cancer cases reported during the trial. Investigators later concluded those cases were not related to the treatment, while additional analyses strengthened confidence in the drug’s long-term safety.
Several analysts now believe a takeover is becoming more likely. Some estimate that Abivax could attract offers worth as much as $29 billion, making it one of the biotech industry’s most closely watched acquisition targets. The opportunity extends beyond one drug.

Abivax is also studying obefazimod as a potential treatment for Crohn’s disease, which could significantly expand the medicine’s commercial potential if future trials succeed.
For now, the company’s biggest priority remains regulatory approval. A successful U.S. launch would transform Abivax from a clinical-stage biotech into a commercial pharmaceutical company.
Whether it reaches that milestone on its own or as part of a larger drugmaker remains one of the biggest questions investors are watching. In today’s biotech industry, promising science often attracts more than patients. It also attracts billion-dollar acquisition offers.
