The Niger State Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has introduced a digital security application designed to help schools report security threats and enable authorities to locate emergencies quickly as part of efforts to strengthen the protection of students and educational facilities.
The application, known as PCRC BOOSTAR, was unveiled alongside the flag-off of the National Safe Schools Initiative in the North-Central state, with plans to establish Safe Schools Clubs to promote security awareness and encourage active participation in protecting school communities.
The initiative is expected to improve communication between schools and security agencies, support the early reporting of suspicious activities and facilitate faster responses to potential threats.
Speaking at the event, the PCRC National Safe Schools Technical Director, Benson Olatunji, said the application incorporates geolocation technology that allows authorities to identify the precise location of an emergency.
The feature is expected to help security personnel determine where assistance is required, potentially reducing delays in responding to incidents reported by schools.
Olatunji also disclosed that the platform includes a feedback mechanism to strengthen communication between users and the relevant authorities. The system is designed to improve coordination among stakeholders involved in school protection and provide a channel through which security concerns can be reported.
He explained that the implementation of the initiative would take place in phases, beginning with the official launch, followed by the collection of data on schools across the states and the training of relevant stakeholders on how to use the platform.
The collection of school data is expected to support the implementation process by helping stakeholders identify the institutions that require coverage and improve coordination during security incidents.

Olatunji highlighted the PCRC’s role as a link between the police and members of the public, noting that community participation remains important to efforts aimed at improving security around schools.
The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and State Coordinator of the Schools Protection Squad, Muhammad Muazu, commended the committee for its partnership with the police.
Elleman described the initiative as a welcome development that could strengthen security coordination, improve service delivery and enhance the safety and well-being of students.
The launch of the application and the Safe Schools Initiative comes amid persistent concerns over the security of educational institutions in Nigeria, where schoolchildren and teachers have faced threats including abductions, armed attacks and other forms of violence in some communities.
Such incidents have disrupted learning, forced school closures and heightened calls for stronger preventive measures and improved collaboration between school authorities, communities and security agencies.
The introduction of PCRC BOOSTAR is intended to provide an additional channel for reporting threats and identifying emergency locations. However, the effectiveness of the platform will depend on its deployment across schools, the training of users and the ability of relevant authorities to respond promptly to reports received through the system.
The planned establishment of Safe Schools Clubs is also expected to support the initiative by encouraging greater awareness of security risks and promoting participation in school safety efforts.
